Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi Full Name: Lionel Andrés Messi
Born: 24 June 1987
Hometown: Rosario, Argentina
Playing Position: Centre Forward
Current Club: Barcelona

Lionel Andres Messi was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency when very young and treatment was very expensive but fortunately Barcelona had spotted a very rare footballing talent and made the offer to pay for the treatment if his family moved to Spain. This was a very shrewd investment for Barcelona and has paid off handsomely in recent years as Messi has established himself as perhaps the best footballer in these times.

Dubbed as the 'new Maradonna' he seemed to play on this idea in 2006/7 by scoring 2 very similar goals to Maradonna's famous goals against England - the long run beating the exact same number of players followed by the celebratory run to the corner flag and also a very similar and blatant 'hand of god' goal.

In 2009 he won the Fifa player of the year and is set to star in the 2010 World Cup.

Because of his own illness as a child Messi has devoted a lot of time and money to helping other Argentian children receive medical care in Spain. He is recognised as an Ambassador of Goodwill by Unicef.
